How much water does your pet really need?

Daily Target

Important: This is a baseline recommendation. If your pet eats wet food, they may drink less water as they get significant hydration from their meals. Always ensure fresh water is available 24/7.

The Critical Role of Hydration

Water makes up approximately 60% to 70% of an adult pet's body weight. Proper hydration is not just about thirst—it is essential for temperature regulation, joint lubrication, waste elimination, and kidney function.

When a pet becomes even slightly dehydrated, their ability to filter toxins through their kidneys decreases, which can lead to chronic renal issues over time. Synchronizing your pet's water intake with their activity level and environmental heat is one of the simplest ways to prevent emergency vet visits.

Environmental Impact

During summer months or in dry climates, a pet's water needs can double. If you notice your pet panting excessively, they are losing moisture rapidly and need immediate access to fresh water.

Kibble vs. Wet Food

Kibble typically contains only 10% water, whereas wet food can contain up to 80%. If your pet is on a dry-only diet, their bowl-drinking volume should be significantly higher.

Signs of Dehydration

  • Loss of skin elasticity (the "tent" test)
  • Dry, sticky gums
  • Sunken or dull eyes
  • Lethargy or unusual panting
