Why Human Foods Can Be Dangerous

Dogs and cats have significantly different metabolic pathways than humans. Foods that are perfectly healthy for us can be life-threatening for them. For example, Xylitol (a common sugar substitute) causes a massive insulin surge in dogs, leading to rapid hypoglycemia and potential liver failure within hours.

Similarly, the compounds found in onions and garlic (thiosulfates) damage the red blood cells of pets, causing oxidative stress and hemolytic anemia. These effects are often cumulative, meaning even small amounts over time can be dangerous.

Hidden Toxins

Many processed human foods contain hidden ingredients like onion powder, grapes, or xylitol. Always check labels before sharing a "safe" treat like peanut butter.

Safe Preparation

When feeding safe fruits/veggies, ensure they are cut into bite-sized pieces and all pits, seeds, or stems are removed to prevent choking or cyanide poisoning.

Emergency Action

If your pet ingests a known toxin, contact an emergency vet immediately. Do not wait for symptoms to appear, as internal damage often begins instantly.
